Sales contest budget calculator
This calculator sizes a sales contest prize pool from incremental margin. Enter team revenue, gross margin, contest length and an assumed lift, and it returns the pool, a prize split across first, second, third and most improved, and the break-even lift at which the contest pays for itself. Sizing from margin is what makes a prize defensible to whoever signs it off.
A quarter is a sensible default — generous enough to matter, conservative enough to survive a miss.

Most improved is scored against each rep's own trailing baseline, so it does not become a second prize for the same people who are already winning.
Frequently asked questions
How much should a sales contest prize be?+
Enough to change behaviour, sized from the margin the contest can realistically generate. A quarter of expected incremental margin is a sensible default: generous enough that reps engage, conservative enough that the programme survives a contest that underperforms.
Why include a most-improved prize?+
Because without one, the bottom half of the board has nothing to win. Most improved is scored against each rep's own trailing baseline rather than absolute output, so it does not become a second prize for the same people already winning — which is exactly what happens when it is scored on raw numbers.
Should the whole prize go to first place?+
No. Winner-takes-all ends the contest for everyone else the moment first place pulls clear, usually around the midpoint. Splitting across three places plus most improved keeps a much larger share of the team still competing in the second half.
How long should the contest run?+
Match it to your sales cycle: about a week for cycles under a fortnight, two weeks for cycles up to 45 days, three weeks beyond that. Compress to ten days or less if you are in the closing weeks of a quarter, where urgency already exists and a long contest competes with it.
